Today we’re continuing our slightly ‘conceptual’ emphasis this week with a series from Paula McCartney:

Baltimore Orioles

Winter Bluebirds

Orange Thrush
From the artist: “‘Bird Watching’ combines varied natural settings with carefully placed craft store songbirds to create an enhanced landscape… The images explore how nature and fabricated elements can combine to create a scene that questions what is natural, and whether being so holds any intrinsic importance.”

Our latest print is ‘In Memory of 12′ by Brighton-based photographer Wendy Pye:

From the artist: “Beachy Head in south east England is known for its quintessential English scenery and also a well-known location for suicide attempts. ‘In Memory Of’ is the first photographic series of the project Beachy Head and documents the flower memorials found along Britain’s highest cliff edge. Through quality of light and feeling for nature, these memorials become symbolic of human fragility and our relationship with loss, tragedy and death.”
The print is available in our usual three sizes, starting from just £19 + p&p.

Our final pick this week is from Kim Cunningham:

From the artist: “This series of photographs document St.Joseph’s, (more fondly known as ‘Holy Joe’s’) Irish Social Centre in North London. I photographed this haven for Irish immigrants in London for over five years, as it declined in numbers. I wanted to capture the ‘notion’ of national identity, as a result of immigration and what it means to those who had to leave their own environment. This project pays homage to this generation of dedicated believers where traditions and customs were preserved by the experience as an Irish immigrant.”

Our selection today is an interesting piece in the Guardian that discusses the real story behind a particular iconic photograph and how the photo has been co-opted to support narratives that are not always in line with the real story.

Photograph: Jimmy Sime/Getty Images
This highlights one of the most fascinating aspects of photography - the idea that a framed shot of a moment in time merely provides evidence of possible narratives - the viewer being free to construct their own narrative based on a combination of the evidence and their own assumptions and interpretations.

From the artist: “Boonville brings together images from six iconographic American towns of the same name in an effort to present a single, unifying view of America. Whether in New York, Indiana or California, each Boonville possesses archetypal American qualities.”
