Pick of the Day - ‘What is England?’

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Firstly, apologies for the lack of a selection yesterday.

Our pick today is ‘What is England?’, a project from Stuart Pilkington. The project involves 50 photographers, one representing each English county and each submitting a single photograph in response to six different assignments. The first assignment, and the one published this week, is ‘Person’.

Two Nova photographers, Ben Roberts and Sarah Amy Smith are taking part in the project as is Nova partner Andrew Newson.

Nova and Ben Roberts Donate Print to VSO

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Nova and Nova photographer Ben Roberts donated a medium sized framed print of ‘Glen Feshie, 6:30am’ to the charity VSO UK for their auction and raffle at their Christmas Concert and Dinner.

Glen Feshie, 6:30am

Rachel Watts, VSO’s Events Manager, thanked Nova and Ben for the contribution: “Thank you again for your generous donation, it was wonderful to be able to display such a beautiful print at dinner and it contributed greatly to the £951, which was raised through the raffle.  To put your donation into context, £500 can train and provide initial funds to 10 HIV+ women in Mozambique to start their own business, giving them and their children income and hope, so we are incredibly grateful for this life-changing donation.”

In total the event raised £49,000 for VSO’s development work.

Photofair 2009

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Andy and I visited Photofair this weekend. Part of Photomonth, the East London Photography Festival, Photofair spreads over Spitalfields market and features an eclectic mix of photographers and galleries selling prints, publishers and photography service providers. Printwise there was something for everyone - from £10 prints from amateur enthusiasts to £10,000+ Burtynsky’s.

We met and talked to a large number of photographers, discovering some great work that hopefully we will be able to make available through the gallery in the not too distant future.

The day was rounded off with a visit to ‘A Place Like Home’ at Foundry and Obama’s People at Flowers Kingsland Road.

Some outtakes and links from the day below.

Miranda Gavin from Hotshoe magazine and Wendy Pye. Hotshoe is available in print bi-monthly for just £23pa, or £25pa for both print and full online access. There’s also Hotblog which Miranda edits.
