From the artist: "The German re-unification
was a unique historical event. Having grown up in
former East Germany I feel extremely privileged to
have witnessed first hand the peaceful revolution,
which brought down the Iron Curtain. Recently, I have
become interested in the drastic changes that this
area of the now unified Germany has undergone. For
the last three years I have been traveling back there
to photograph different areas of change: infrastructure,
industry and the political geography and architecture
(i.e. the former border areas and parliament building,
the Stasi Archives, factories, roads and trainlines
etc). I've tried to remain distant from the subject
wherever possible. I leave plenty of room for the
viewer’s imagination to explore what East Germany
might have been like, is like now, and how it would
feel to have lived there before and after the fall
of the wall. I was particularly interested in how
a very specific political situation and a sudden radical
process of political and social change had left visible
traces, some of which have already deliberately been
eradicated. But even the very process of eradication
has left discernable traces. While some images are
personally relevant to me others have greater historical
relevance."
