Bernauer Strasse by Lydia
Polzer
From the artist: "This image is of Bernauer
Strasse in Berlin. It shows a now derelict area of where the
Berlin Wall once stood. The path at the centre of the picture
might be where soldiers guarding the Wall once marched up
and down. I walked along large stretches of the former site
of the Wall. While most of it has disappeared, this scar of
where the deathstrip used to be is often still very visible.
"The Berlin wall was built on August
13, 1961 – a barbed wire fence, placed a few feet within the
East German territory so as not to incite arguments over encroaching
on West German land. But a barbed wire fence quickly turned
into an elaborate border control bulwark. Along a 155km stretch
45,000 sections of re-inforced concrete, each 3.6m high and
1.2m wide, surrounded West Berlin. But that was only the outer
rim of the massive mechanism in place to stop escapees. There
were 116 watch-towers and the deathstrip which was up to 100m
wide in places with trip wire, anti-vehicle trenches, mesh
fences and barbed wire. More barbed wire, trenches, electric
alarms and mine fields secured the 1381km of the line that
cut Germany, Europe and the world in two – the Iron Curtain."
