Untitled - Wait #7 by Tom
Hull
From the artist: "These two girls were
shot in LA as part of my portrait series 'wait'. Whilst scouting
for locations, I would walk around, with just a little digital
camera, my main camera in it's bag, searching for a backdrop
I felt would look interesting. I didn't really have an EXACT
idea of what I wanted, but knew that if I found something
suitable, then I'd know it.
"I found this spot, which I loved for
it's graphic composition, fading shadows of the palm tree,
slightly grubby exterior, but was clean enough to work. I
sat. I waited. Subtly scanning the to-ing and fro-ing of people
as they wandered past in their own worlds. I had loaded my
camera by this point and waited for the right kind of people
to come along, I didn't know who they would be or why I would
choose them, I just knew they would be right when I saw them.
"After about twenty minutes, I spotted
these two girls and was interested by their similar clothing,
their overzealous sunglasses, very 'of-the-now' clothing and
slight awkwardness. I approached them, told them my spiel
that I was a photographer, from England, making a series about
people 'of the area' - and asked them if they would mind if
I shot them. They agreed, gingerly, and I set about positioning
them in the frame, chatting to them for a moment, whilst shooting
a few frames. I didn't want smiles, lies, poses - just them,
in my location. And that's what I got - oh and a plastic fork
on the floor, which I left in because it completely made the
shot for me! I had 'waited' for the location, the timing,
the sitters and equally they had 'waited' for me to move them,
shoot them and let them free again."
